Srinagar-Leh Highway likely to open in last week of April : Col P Kumar Qamar Ali Akhoon asked BRO for early opening of Highway Murtaza Ali Kargil/Jammu, 03 March: The Srinagar-Leh National Highway 1D will open for vehicular Traffic by the late week of April 2014 which is one month late from last year, VIJAYAK is clearing 30 feet or more of snow accumulated by wind or avalanches. Project VIJAYAK of Border Roads Organization has reached at Machoyi 26 km from Drass 3 Km before Gumri, Col P Kumar CO VIJAYAK told that his team has started the Snow Clearance work on time on 10th of March 2014 but due to the heavy snowfall after one day created the problem. He said that his team has to restart the clearance work from Matayen and this time the snow accumulation is more than last year which even creates problem in locating the road. He appreciated the efforts of the VIJAYAK Personal working on the road particularly the Locals as according to him without them the task was not successful. Col P Kumar termed the Zojjila pass as an important link (Lifeline for Ladakh Particularly Kargil) and his team is doing their best to reach the target before time but he added that due to the heavy snowfall in the second week of March this year there will remain possibilities of Avalanches after the snow clearance which is the biggest challenge to face. Earlier Project VIJAYAK started the Snow Clearance work on 10th of March 2014 which has to stop due to heavy snowfall. Advisior to Chief Minister, Mr. Qamar Ali Akhoon also confermed that from Srinagar side the VIJAYAK has reached Sonamarg. They are in full swing in order to open the Srinagar Leh National Highway at earliest. He said that if weather condition remains normal in this month, Highway will be open for traffic in April last week as possible to facilitate the people. I am in contact with the official of Border Road Organization from both side and I had asked them to put all the required man power and machineries for early opening, Akhoon added. He further said that last year due to good weather condition the Highway was open for traffic on 6 April.
