Srinagar, Sep 18: Panic gripped Hyderpora area of Srinagar when gunshots were heard in the uptown locality Wednesday evening. While Army said militants opened fire on its personnel, police said they did not find anything and an investigation has been launched to ascertain the facts. Witnesses said that around 20 gunshots were heard at 6:50 PM, forcing people to run for cover. Senior police officials arrived at the spot and the area was cordoned off. “There were one-by-one gunshots,” the residents told Greater Kashmir. They added that the area had witnessed stone throwing and clashes during the day. “We thought that cops were firing in air to disperse protesters,” they said. “The area was scanned, but we did not find anything,” Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Central Kashmir, Syed Afadul Mujtaba told Greater Kashmir. However, a spokesman of Army’s 15 Corps told Greater Kashmir that militants opened fire on their soldiers but there was no loss of life. “Our parties were returning and the fire was opened on them,” he said adding that soldiers retaliated with utmost restraint as large number of people were around. “The militants took advantage of presence of people and fled from the spot,” the spokesman said. The area witnessed a major militant attack on an Army convoy on June 25 in which eight soldiers were killed and more than a dozen injured. The attack took place on the eve of PM’s visit to J&K.
