Sriram Panchu on the new NJAC - some extremely sane points indeed: (1) the collegium system has somehow managed even to alienate the Bar (counter-intuitive as that sounds), on account of its opaqueness and many a questionable appointment/omission over the past 20 years; (2) that said, judicial independence was secured by this system, and that is obviously not something to be compromised now; (3) the NJAC will not succeed if does not have the correct structures to support it, in particular those that facilitate the proper vetting of candidates (considering that over 100 appointments will have to be made each year); (4) a permanent Search Committee must be conceived of to aid the NJAC in its work, and it must function in a transparent manner. The concurrence of the CJI in the appointment of the 2 eminent persons onto the NJAC should also be given careful thought - hope the President returns the Bill with that remark.
