St Agnes Coastguard and St Agnes Lifeboat were tasked this evening - TopicsExpress

St Agnes Coastguard and St Agnes Lifeboat were tasked this evening to reports of a swimmer in difficulty between Droskyn Point and Cathedral Caverns, Perranporth. With the surf so big, and wrapping in from a slightly north westerly direction, pushing south towards the cavern, speed was of the essence to ensure the safety of the girl. (Afterwards the girl said to Coastguards how she had swum north parallel to the beach for 40mins and only travelled approximately 10metres. ) On arrival at the youth hostel on Droskyn Point, the first coastguard was able to spot and then direct the lifeboat onto the casualty, who were able to successfully pick her up and return her to shore. Meanwhile, the first informant was able to tell of another swimmer who had been washed in under the cliff, but had made her own way around the point to safety. He was also then informed of two rescuers who had swum and waded around to Cathedral caverns looking for the first swimmer. It was at this point the search switched to the caverns for the two men. After some searching, the pair were located on a ledge at the entrance to the cavern. The surf conditions meant it was too dangerous for the lifeboat to operate with two casualties, so another rescue method was decided on. With the tide now coming in, and the sun starting to set, a helicopter was tasked for speed, but the cliff rescue team also started setting up for a rope rescue in case of delay. Royal Navy helicopter R193 arrived just as the cliff team were ready to go, and then proceeded to winch the two casualties to safety. A great outcome from this team effort.
