St. Anselm football wins home opener, goes to 3-0 Despite trailing by 10 points with 10 minutes left in the game, the St. Anselm College football team came back to beat Bentley University, 38-34, in the Hawks’ home opener on Saturday at Grappone Stadium in Goffstown. Hawks quarterback Yianni Gavalas found receivers Justin Bernard and Brandon Gomes early and often in the contest. The two receivers combined for 19 receptions, 229 yards and two touchdowns. Fellow receiver Nick Marcella also tallied his fair share of catches, as he caught seven for 78 yards. The Hawks tallied 499 yards of total offense in the win. St. Anselm overcame two turnovers and nine penalties and didn’t lead in the game until its final touchdown of the game with less than two minutes remaining. Elad Covaliu scored from the Bentley 3 to cap a 95-yard day on 20 carries. Western Connecticut State 45, Plymouth St. 7: At Danbury, Conn., senior quarterback Will Arndt tied a school record with six touchdown passes to help Western Connecticut improve its record to 2-1. Arndt tied a record set by Joe DiMeglio against Plymouth State in 2005. Running back Mark Hennessy led Plymouth State with 66 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.
