St. Dominic was a Spanish theologian who lived from around 1170 to 1221. He was the founder of the Roman Catholic religious order of Dominicans. Around the year 1203, Pope Innocent III sent to him to preach in southern France. At the time, the Albigensians were spreading a doctrine known as “dualism”. The doctrine basically said that all matter was evil and the creator of the material world was the devil. At one point in his mission he received the rosary from the Virgin Mary in a vision. Mary told him to Pray my Psalter and teach it to your people. That prayer will never fail. St. Dominic did as he was instructed. Eventually the doctrine was defeated. St. Dominic is widely associated the origin of the Rosary because of his widespread teaching on the rosary and the meditations of the life, death and resurrection of Christ.
