St. Francis de Sales St. Francis de Sales Church and School Though the name has changed the memory lives on. St. Francis de Sales parish and school closed it’s doors forever on June 30 1983.Even though it physically does not exist, it’s spirit, tradition and history lives on today in those that were fortunate enough to have been blessed with it’s presence, and this era of Catholic education. Founded in April 29 1881, Father Charles Curran it’s first Pastor, began the task of serving the Catholic Community on the near east side of Indianapolis, in an area known as Brightwood. The present church building, which was designed by George Vincent Bedell, was built in 1913 and still stands today. The rectory was attached to the church and contained the priests’ residence and parish offices. The parish school dates back to 1903 staffed by Franciscan Sisters from Oldenburg until it was closed in 1970. It was reopened in 1977 staffed by lay persons, adding a grade each year until by Sept. 1981 grade 5 had been added. The church and school buildings remain. The rectory no longer exists. Those dedicated nuns and lay teachers taught the basic subjects of reading, writing and arithmetic’ however it’s lessons in values, community and friendship were instrumental in the development of the many students that passed through the halls and sat in the classrooms of St. Francis de Sales Grade School. It was a simple time. Families developed close ties and the neighborhood., looked out for one another. There was a sense of Community which lives on in the descendants of those Families of St. Francis de Sales parish. Economic times being what they were plus the completion of Interstate 70, which literally split the parish in two brought about the decision by the archdiocese of Indianapolis to close the parish for good. The final mass and official gathering of this proud parish took place on June 19 1983 After this the property was purchased by Fr. Boniface Hardin for the purpose of establishing Martin University.
