St James’s Church, Hampton Hill, is holding its own Festival of Remembrance on Friday 8 November at 7.30pm, featuring two contrasting choirs and readings by local TV personality Amanda Lamb. The Teddington and Hampton Hill Rock Choir and The Cambrian Singers will each sing under the theme of remembrance. In addition to hearing some of the best-known war poems, the church has also researched the names adorning the War Memorial in the churchyard and will be relating some of the details. The evening will be raising money for the charity Combat Stress. A small but significant number of veterans leave the Armed Forces every year with psychological wounds such as depression, phobias or post-traumatic stress disorder. Combat Stress helps provide effective treatment and support for mental health problems. Lt Col Peter Poole MBE MILT, the charity’s Director of Strategic Planning and Partnerships, will outline the difference they can make. The evening will end with an act of remembrance and a bugle sounding the Last Post. Representatives from the local branches of the Royal British Legion and Royal Naval Association have been invited. The Revd Peter Vannozzi, Vicar of St James’s Church, said: ‘War has had a major impact on Hampton Hill and in the church’s 150th anniversary year we wanted to reflect and commemorate that. From the soldiers who failed to return from the First and Second World Wars to the scars on the landscape caused by bombing missions. Smaller conflicts continue to kill or injure UK servicemen and the lives of whole families can be shattered in an instant. But there are also stories of enormous courage and I hope that our tribute will also give us hope for a better tomorrow.’
