St. John Video Clip #4 “A St. Johnian called to tell me that on his property tax bill recently received- his tax did not double, triple, or quadruple, in fact it went up by more than 5 times the previous valuation. In the HOVENSA matter, we voted to forbear on one half--$7 million worth of HOVENSA’s property tax payment for the period required to sell the corporation, or as many as 6 years. It seems so often that we can find a way to accommodate big business when necessary but ready to sock it to our residents all the time. I voted not to reward HOVENSA for its breach.” “As an Independent Senator, I am the only non-Democrat in the District of St. Thomas and St. John. There is always in our elections a call by the Democratic Party to have a clean sweep—to take every seat in the Legislature. I respect your choice of party and of party affiliation. Much has been accomplished by parties when people work together but surely even die-hard Democrats would see the impracticability of a one-party state, a one-party government with no Independent or other voices.” “There is simply too much at stake to select persons solely on the basis of whether there is a symbol attached to their name or not. I believe in merit, that you should deserve not feel entitled to the vote of the people, that you should work, and work hard, should give a thing everything that you have and that is the measure by which you should be rewarded. There is too much at stake for us to vote simply by what symbol you affix to your name. “I close as I began, by thanking all of these incredible people for their faith in me for using so much of their strength and personal power to support me in this important cause, and I humbly ask that you cast a vote for me Tregenza Roach, number 11 when you go to the polls in November. God bless you, God bless us. God bless the Virgin Islands.”
