St, Josephs 8th grade Arkansas History students had a History - TopicsExpress

St, Josephs 8th grade Arkansas History students had a History Helper visit them on September 18th. Debra Lewis of Conway came to demonstrate the difficulties encountered by explorers William Dunbar and George Hunter when they were commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson in 1804 to investigate that part of the Louisiana Purchase which included Arkansas Ouachita River and Hot Springs. The Ouachita is like a snake, Ms. Lewis said. Sometimes the explorers and their crew had to take their sail down and use oars to move the boat. When the water got too shallow, they had to push poles to move it. They might even have to use ropes to pull it through shallow spots. All these options were demonstrated to the students which they got to mimic. Some students also got to model typical clothing from the early 19th century. While all this was going on, students were recording video and still pictures of what was happening that theyll be incorporating into glogs, which are digital interactive posters. Lewis and her associates with History Helpers travel to schools around the state in support of social studies classes. We formed in 2006 out of our passion to learn history and our desire to teach it in such a way as to inspire that passion in others, Lewis said.
