St Kildas Island - a three hour boat trip out into the Atlantic of very bad sea-sickness (how come my ancestors were seafarers??) People taken off in 1930s. They had lived on eating seabirds and eggs. Huge numbers of sea birds...on stacks of basalt that went straight up from the sea. Eleven men stranded on one rock for nine months, and nine survived. Tough people. Very sad, haunted place. End of an era of self sufficiency - there had been people on that island for 4,000 years....
