St. Leonard, was a Frankish noble in the court of Clovis I, founder of the Merovingian dynasty. He was converted to Christianity along with the king, at Christmas 496 A.D.,by St. Remigius, Bishop of Reims; he asked the king to grant him personally the right to liberate prisoners whom he would find worthy of it,making them understand that the captivity of sin was more terrible than any mere bodily constraint. He won over a great many of these unfortunate persons, which gained for him many disciples, in whose behalf of a new monastery.he founded at Noblac, around which a village grew, named in his honour Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat, now a UNESCO world heritage site to pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. St. Leonard died about the year 550 A.D. & is venerated as patron saint of political prisoners, imprisoned people, prisoners of war, and captives, women in labour, as well as horses.
