St Luke’s campus set for facelift A £10.5 million expansion of the St. Luke’s campus’ South Cloisters is due to begin later this month, after full planning permission and internal funding were obtained. The project will see a new storey being added to the building, and an extension of its fourth storey. Driven by the Medical School’s expected growth, the upgrades will offer new bookable teaching and learning space, as well as study and research areas, which will be available to all students. Local contractor, Midas Construction – one of the largest companies in the UK construction and property services industry, will carry out the construction. It will be completed in stages, with the study spaces, research areas, and teaching rooms, set to be ready for use in this year’s Autumn term, February 2015, and September 2015 respectively. In an article for the university website, Professor Steve Thornton, Dean for the medical school, was quoted as saying: “It (the expansion) will help accommodate our plans for growth and will provide a modern facility for medical research, and for teaching and learning across all Colleges.” Such excitement is not limited to just the faculty, with first-year Sports Science student Shane Yeap, 22, expressing his anticipation for the works’ completion as well. He said: “I like the idea of the new study areas. A fair bit of my classes are on the St. Luke’s campus, and having study space means I have an alternative to walking back to Streatham (campus) to work during long breaks”. Construction is expected to be relatively hassle-free, with parking at St. Luke’s not being affected, and the Cloister’s Cafe staying open.
