St. Martins Cathedral, Utrecht, or Dom Church (Dutch: Domkerk) was the cathedral of the Diocese of Utrecht during the Middle Ages. It was at one time the largest Church in the Netherlands. During The Reformation, the reformers came in with hammers and took the heads off the statues. To stand before the bludgeoned art is a humbling experience. I imagined the courage it took to do this to the powers that ran the world, and I feared the violence in the destructive act. I posted the picture of the decapitated altar piece yesterday, and the discussion got heated. I doubt we will ever come to a consensus on things like this. The controversy continues, 500+ years later.
