St. Michael’s Cathedral is a great example of old Russian church architecture. It was designed by Bishop Innocent Veniaminov, the greatest Orthodox Missionary in Alaska who came to Sitka in 1834. He returned to Russia in 1838 and in 1840 was elevated to the rank of Bishop. He became the first Bishop of Alaska and upon his return to Sitka in 1841 began planning the construction of the cathedral. The cornerstone was laid in 1844. Read more: bit.ly/1BAbsFt
