From the Fathers of the Church … St. Augustine The whole human race, like this woman, was bent over and bound down to the ground. Someone already understands these enemies. He cries out against them and says to God, “They have bowed my soul down.” (Ps 57: 6) The devil and his angels have bowed the souls of men and women down to the ground. He has bent them forward to be intent on temporary and earthly things and has stopped them form seeking the things that are above. (see Col 3: 1) Year of Faith KEEP OPEN THE DOORS OF FAITH YEAR OF FAITH – Oct. 11, 2012 to Nov. 24, 2013 Blessed John Paul II, when he began his papal ministry, said: “Do not be afraid. Open, I say open wide the doors for Christ!” At the beginning of the Year of Faith, a triptych folder was distributed by our Eparchy with a photo of His Grace, Bishop Gerald, opening a church door. The caption reads: “Open Wide the Doors of Faith.” Opening the doors of our lives to Christ is the beginning of salvation. Now we need to open wide the doors of our churches to go out and share the message of Christ with others. Let’s invite others to share in the life of our Church. Bishop Gerald wrote: “My prayer for all of the clergy and faithful of our Eparchy of the Holy Protection of Mary during this Year of Faith is that you will always meditate on the fact that each and everyone of you is made in the Image and Likeness of God and that you should reflect that Image and Likeness in your everyday lives so that people will come to you and say: ‘I never even heard of the Byzantine Church before, but, if you are an example of what it means to be Byzantine, I want to be a part of that Church!’” (Pastoral Letter, 2012). From November 15th till December 24th, we observe St. Philip Fast, during which we prepare for the Nativity of Our Lord celebration. Fridays are days of penance in our liturgical calendar.
