Stable housing plays a critical role in preventing costly new HIV infections, improving HIV-related health outcomes, reducing mortality, and decreasing the use of expensive emergency care and other crisis services. Stable housing is critical to helping those living with HIV adhere to treatment, reducing the likelihood of more costly HIV-related complications; and suppression of viral load achieved through adherence to treatment also reduces the likelihood of further transmissions. In addition, each new HIV infection prevented through more stable housing saves countless life years and $379,668 in lifetime HIV treatment costs. Action to meet HIV housing needs is, therefore, a wise use of limited public resources. AIDS United works to ensure that federal housing programs like the Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA) program are appropriately funded and continues to help those with the greatest need.
