Staff departing Maria Island National Park yesterday afternoon had an extra special commute when they encountered two humpback whales clearly enjoying a breaching session in the Mercury Passage. ‘Despite the heavy swell and rain, it was an absolute delight’ said PWS staff member Darroch Donald. ‘I was torn between taking these photos, or just admiring the show and joining in with the inevitable ‘ooohs and ahhhs’ of the others on board each time the whales rose so spectacularly out of the water’. Maria Island and the waters that surround it are full of surprises, so why not visit this summer and discover its many wonders for yourself! As you can see, even the ferry trip is wonderful. If you are lucky enough to see Whales please report the sighting to Whale Hotline 0427 WHALES (0427 942537) … real-time sighting reports provide important information on patterns of occurrence and migration pathways, and allows us to respond rapidly to sightings of particular interest or to emergencies such as entanglement and stranding. Photos are particularly useful for identifying individuals that may have been seen in Tasmania during previous years.
