Staffordshire Riots The major Staffordshire riot appears to have been at Wolverhampton, but there are some indications in the Home Office papers that a riot occurred at Lichfield. On 8 December 1832, Philips, undersecretary of state at the Home Office wrote to Major General Campbell that riots had recently occurred there. Five days later, on 13 December, he acknowledged a letter from the mayor of Lichfield stating that riots did occur there and military force had been applied for . It is a possibility that here they are referring to disturbances during the election of 1831, and are merely being prudent about the likelihood of disturbances during the election of 1832. Lichfield certainly had a political union (as we have noted), and there had been a reform meeting there in May 1832. Given the fact that there were major riots in nearby towns such as Walsall and Wolverhampton, it is not unlikely that such an event may have happened there, but the paucity of the evidence does not allow us to state that with conviction.
