Stage 5 of the Breck Epic. Way to go Carlos. Good evening - TopicsExpress

Stage 5 of the Breck Epic. Way to go Carlos. Good evening my friends! Today the forecast called for an 80% chance for rain but we just had a slightly overcast day with a little rain at the end of race. I was super grateful for that because the Wheeler pass stage is so challenging. We were above timberline for about 30 plus minutes and half of that time it was a hike a bike for everyone. Dan was on his game today and he pushed the pace all the way to the top of Wheeler while Dax and I were chasing. The cool thing about being above timberline is that you can see everyone - just think of marching ants. Dan and Dax had about a minute on me at the top of Wheeler. I had Jason Hilgers and Vince Anderson on my tail so there was no time to catch my breath. The descent on Wheeler is treacherous and a lot of folks get injured so I wasn’t about to take a chance, so I made the decent without taking any dirt samples. Since we were on the other side of the pass, we had to ride the bike path back to Frisco to get back on the dirt. This put us on the Miner’s Creek jeep road which was really rocky so it was a constant struggle to get into a rhythm. I was by myself the last nine miles but I kept pushing because I knew Jason and Vince were chasing hard. I ended up finishing third for the day. As soon as I crossed the finish line, Dan told me that Dax slipped on one of the wooden bridges in the woods and dislocated his shoulder. Once he crossed the finish line the medics popped his shoulder back into place. The crazy thing is that last year Dax wrecked on the Wheeler decent and punched his lung and broke his ribs which put him out of the race. So he said he is going to try and race tomorrow in hopes that he doesn’t lose his race lead and wins the overall. Today’s stage was very challenging for me and I was suffering all day, so I am hoping for a better day tomorrow for the last stage. Today’s song is Rage Against the Machine – No Shelter youtube/watch?v=6NEoesmnYU4 Tomorrow is stage six the final – The Gold Dust Trail with 31 miles and 3500 feet of climbing. Thanks for reading and have a great evening. I will send a final update this weekend sometime. I also attached a photo of Wheeler Pass and a podium pic.
