Stage Set For #SOP Finals #Qatar @SchoolsOlympic The Organising Committee of the Schools Olympic Program (SOP) 2013 -2014 under the theme “ Sport and Integrity” held a press conference on the SOP finals the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) Headquarters on Sunday. The SOP Executive Director, Mr. Mohammed Issa Al-Fadallah unveiled the final managerial and technical arrangements have been taken by the committee to organize the SOP closing scene at the Aspire Dome on Thursday and Friday consecutively. The number of Qatar students participating in the seventh edition of the Schools Olympic Program (SOP), in partnership with the Supreme Education Council, for the year 2013-14 has gone up by 21.97% compared to last year, Al-Fadallah announced. Addressing the media, the SOP Executive Director said “This year 461 schools are participating in the SOP. Of these 251 are boys schools and 210 girls schools. Last year 365 schools (207 boys, 158 girls) participated.” “A total of 26,454 students (17,625 boys, 8,829 girls) are participating in SOP events this year compared to 21,688 (14,679 boys, 7,009 girls) in 2012-13.” he added. This shows the success of program partners’ effort to promote multi sports to encourage fitness and healthy lifestyle along with education in association with the Supreme Education Council, he said and added that 80% of the 26,000 participating students in SOP are not registered with local sports clubs. The participants in the 7th SOP edition are competing in 11 sports – shooting, football, volleyball, basketball, handball, athletics, tennis, table tennis, gymnastics, swimming and fencing. The SOP is giving a total prize-money of QR 45,000 for the winning schools at each stage . First place winners will win QR 20,000, second will win QR 15,000 and QR 10,000 to the third place. The finals will be held at the Aspire Dome on March 20 and 21. The SOP’s vision is to create an educational event that affects the young athletes and inspires them to play a positive role in the local community.
