Staging a successful event – Part 2 Research – will you attract the number of visitors you want / need to attend? You should assume that organising your event is going to be tough. It’s going to involve lots of hard work, so you need to know what the minimum number of visitors you want is. I have found, consistently, that people are over optimistic when it comes to attracting people to visit events. It is NOT easy to attract public to visit an event. If you believe it is easy, frankly, you are deluded, reality check required. When you research people to find out what the interest levels in your event are going to be, try your hardest to be pessimistic about the results – it is a fact that people, in general, prefer to agree when asked a question than be totally honest. This is particularly relevant if you survey a group of people that you know or friends or family. You must conduct your research away from those that you know, unless you are organising a family gathering of course! It is also worth pointing out that people will often change their minds when it comes to physically paying for something – like a ticket to an event. What they say when you ask vs what they think when they have to put their hand in their pocket is often very different. Don’t believe the hype – you see other people, colleagues, peers saying that they attracted HUGE amounts of people to their event – didn’t they do well! It’s an easy conclusion to think that if they can do it, so can you. The problem is that very often, the numbers they say they attracted are not accurate. People love to exaggerate, they like you to think that they are successful and that they didn’t actually fail to reach their target number of visitors. I see this ALL of the time, so unless (like my events) the visitor numbers are audited (look out for the ‘clicker counters’ on all entrances to BodyPower) or there’s good evidence that they did actually reach the quoted visitor numbers (beware of the clever camera angle which can make an empty room look busy) you need to be a little sceptical when you are using someone else’s event turnout to gauge whether you should run one yourself.
