Stalagmites are formed when rain penetrates through limestone, causing mineral-rich water to drip into a cave, forming tower-like structures of calcium carbonate. By analysing isotopes in the calcium carbonate, researchers can get detailed climate records of the tropics. For example, a recent study confirmed that stalagmites hidden deep underground in Indonesia’s Liang Luar cave contain detailed climate records about the last 31,000 years of monsoon activity in Australasia.
