Stalemate in Elgins 500th league match... ELGIN City were held to a 1-1 draw by bottom side Queen’s Park in their 500th Scottish League game on Saturday. Dennis Wyness struck his 10th goal of the season in Elgins 1-1 draw against Queens Park. Manager Barry Wilson was disappointed the team couldn’t mark the occasion with a home win. “We had no cutting edge,” he said. “We missed a first chance in the opening minute and then they went up the park and scored. “Once we got level, we missed two unbelievable chances to win it. I would say we just about shaded it. We tried to play football but in the final third we were not good enough.” Shane Sutherland was denied in the first and last minutes of the match. With only Queen’s Park keeper Blair Lochhead to beat he shot straight him with 20 seconds on the clock. And in the 90th minute the City striker was denied by a superb diving save by the Spiders’ number one. The visitors struck the opening goal on just two minutes with a good low finish by Eamonn Brophy. Craig Sutherland missed a glorious chance to make it 2-0, but City deserved to trail at the break after a disappointing show. They drew level with a deflected effort by man of the match Dennis Wyness, who belied his 37 years with a polished performance. Sub Adam MacLeod fired wide with the goal at his mercy on 78 minutes, before Lochhead’s last minute save kept out Sutherland. City lost Mark Nicolson to a hamstring injury midway through the first half, while illness put paid to Paul Harkins afternoon by half time. But they welcomed back Aberdeen loan youngster Jamie Masson to their starting line-up from injury. (By Craig Christie/The Northern Scot) Elgin: Gibson, MacDonald (MacLeod 60), Finlayson, Crighton, Nicolson (Duff 29), Harkins (McHardy 46), Gunn, Masson, Wyness, Sutherland, Beveridge. Subs: MacKenzie, Bayne, Urquhart, Jellema.
