Stan Starcomesout 14 hours ago via mobile Once the pluralist idea of Indian people having a right to self-determination had become respectable in the political dialogue of Indian Affairs in the U.S., there could be no going back to the old representation of power in which Indian people were neither competent nor authorized to speak for themselves. This postcolonial culture of Indian Affairs surely had a role to play in the Wounded Knee incident--- in eliciting Lakota resistance on Pine Ridge Reservation, and in making the resistance meaningful to the powerful non-Indians who helped decide the fate of the occupiers. And the postcolonial culture of Indian affairs invented during the New Deal continues to be important in the present for Lakota peopleUUin helping to legitimize the legal and political demands of the tribal governments for empowerment and territorial sovereignty. WE HAVE YET TO SEE THE LEGACY OF THE NEW DEAL AMONG THE LAKOTA FULLY PLAYED OUT ORGANIZING THE LAKOTA (Biolsi)
