Stanley Sutka enlisted 8 February 1942 and served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry. Missing at sea 11 November 1942; later presumed dead a year later. On that date his ship, U.S.S. Joseph Hewes, was sunk by an enemy submarines during the occupation of North Africa by United Forces. Approximately 100 seamen were lost. His remains have not been recovered. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5414 honors Stanley Sutka, the first Hegewisch resident to die in combat during the Second World War. The Post was chartered in January 1946. It had a headquarters building at 133rd and Brainard.
