Star Theater Grand Opening to feature hometown musicians A full slate of Villa Grove-based musical talent will mark the grand opening of the Star Theater this Friday, May 9th, at 7:00 p.m. beginning with two groups featuring Villa Grove’s own, guitarist Tom Tewell. The first group to perform revives a classic rock cover group Tom formed in the mid ‘80s – Albert Flasher featuring Tom Tewell – guitar, Joey Daugherty (from rural Tuscola) – guitar/lead vocals, Jeff Gallagher (Sibley) – bass guitar, and Ed Vangetson (Tolono) – Drums. Up next is the group Spectrum, a band Tom Tewell and guitarist Kevin Gaddis (Villa Grove) formed to play original music compositions written by Tom and Kevin that display an eclectic blend of several musical styles that cover a wide spectrum (hence the genesis of the band’s name). The rest of Spectrum’s members include; Mary Tewell – keyboard/vocals, Terry McCartney (Atwood) – bass/vocals, and Ed Vangetson – drums/vocals. Both Tom and Kevin have deep roots in the local area music scene. Tom was a member of Southern Cross and opened for 38 Special, Cheap Trick, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, and the Marshall Tucker Band. Kevin was the lead vocalist/guitarist of the popular band Backstage Boogie. The younger side of Villa Grove musical talent follows with VGHS senior – guitarist Garrett Gunter. Garrett will play a few solo guitar selections and then bring on stage with him bassist Max Kestner , who currently is a music education freshman at Eastern Illinois University majoring on trombone, and drummer Daniel Cassida, also a VGHS senior. A special musical selection, featuring Garrett Gunter, Tom Tewell, Mark King, and Tony Vogel (Villa Grove’s newest resident musician) on acoustic guitar playing the popular ‘70s group – America’s tune entitled “Ventura Highway”. The last group of the evening to perform is the band Superbad, featuring former Villa Grove Instrumental Music instructor Mark King. Superbad features a dynamic rhythm section (consisting of guitarist – Reverend Robert from Charleston, bassist – Justin Byers (Effingham), and drummer – Dave Stephens, from Mattoon, along with an accomplished horn section (Glenn ‘Lip’ Lewis – trumpet, Dusty Maninfior – sax, and Mark King – trombone/sax/flute). The group covers a wide variety of musical styles including funk, classic rock, rap, disco, and reggae. Since four groups will be featured, each musical act will be relatively short, so don’t miss out on the opportunity to see and hear what Villa Grove has to offer at the Star Theater this Friday evening! The Star Theatre would like to thank Mark King for this article. :)
