Star Trek 3 - The Search for a Director ... screenfantastique Movie News, Reviews & Analysis The news that Roberto Orci was no longer directing the next Star Trek feature was a strange mix of thank goodness and WTF. Orci had not endeared himself to fans when he bit back, via social media, about criticism of Star Trek Into Darkness. His subsequent appointment to Star Trek 3 as Director was regarded as folly on the part of both Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions, the films financier. Orci, to that point, had no directing experience. His departure has caused a collective sigh of relief among fans, but now means the films release date could be pushed back unless a great director is found to take on the project. Paramount Pictures are currently considering all options but three names mentioned in connection with the film are worth mentioning. Rupert Wyatt, the Director who breathed new life into the Planet of the Apes franchise is the apparent front runner and would be an excellent choice. Duncan Jones is also in the running, but his commitment to the Warcraft film seems to be the biggest obstacle. He would be a fantastic choice to give Star Trek a very different look and feel. Finally, Fast & Furious stalwart Justin Lin may be a long-shot, but his ability to capture high speed action may be exactly what the somewhat sedate franchise needs for it to compete against the many other blockbusters scheduled for the middle of 2016. Let us know who you would like to see direct the Star Trek feature.
