Star Wars Rebels? Yes! Im sold. The lead characters who were introduced by John Jackson Miller in his funtastic novel Star Wars: A New Dawn come to life in this new animated series. While it has hints of Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series (of which I was not a big fan), it definitely stands on its own. The animation is still not quite what I generally like but grew on me in just the one episode. The music rocked my world! Very original trilogy, it tied this new genesis of the Rebellion to my deep seated love for the original trilogy. The story was excellent, very much old school Star Wars but with an updated feel that launched it beyond what could have been a rehashing of the original trilogy, the prequels or The Clone Wars animated series. While I would have liked more of Kanan and Hera, the introduction of Ezra, Zeb and Sabine made up for it. Im smitten by Sabine (yes, an animated character), they fed me just enough of her for me to be intrigued by her gorgeous Mandalorian armor and its background, her seemingly aloof attitude through which a caring (and surprising for someone who might have a Mando background) streak shows through. Zeb, has potential but at this point is exactly the kind of tough-guy with a heart character I fully expect to see in any Star Wars crew. Well see how he fleshes out. Ezra has just enough of the Luke Skywalker force-sensitive without knowing it flavor without being a carbon copy to make him interesting and his own character. Chopper is the typical droid in the R2-D2 mold and like Zeb, Ill leave for later to see how he fleshes out. Agent Kallus is the typical Imperial foil to our rebel team and was my least favorite of the characters as he typified the arch-enemy in most Star Wars stories and hopefully will be fleshed out more as the series continues. Most intriguing was The Inquisitor who got very little screen time.. just enough to make me want more.. here, potentially, is the villain that will be the centerpiece of the series. All in all, Im very pleased and in fact the first episode exceeded my expectations. Im very much looking forward to more, especially from Kanan, Hera, Sabine and The Inquisitor. A full recommendation for the first episode from this Star Wars fan!
