Starr Kiele K STARR KIELE SAID: 11 hours ago near Boulder Creek, CA · I will admit I was guilty of seeing Rex but not REALLY seeing or paying attention to him….he came into East Valley as a ‘pos owner’ - had a microchip -back on August 11 - his owners were notified - and were going to redeem him but either changed their mind or couldn’t afford to - whichever - so he sat in a kennel until last Sunday -- this couple had seen another dog who was 4 or 5 years younger than Rex, but was not available for adoption yet, so asked to see Rex. I took Rex out - which by looking at his kennel card - appears to be the first time he was walked since his available date which was 8/20! He’s strong on the leash, but manageable - completely non-reactive to the barking dogs - actually pulled me to get past them - but did stop at a kennel with four small dogs in it - to say hello, wag his tail and then moved on - when we got to the yard he did his obligatory sniffing and then was ready to get some pets. He’s the strong, silent (for the most part) type - accepting of touching and pets, not pushy, doesn’t jump up on you, has had some training, will sit for treats and is very gentle taking them. He may have been kept as an outside dog the majority of time, because he has an area on the top of his nose that is very pink and looks sunburned and also the top of his ears - along with obvious fly strikes. But Rex is a healthy guy otherwise - good body weight, clear eyes, no scarring or apparent physical issues - and it appeared he was finally going to get a home because the couple decided to adopt him. Or so I thought. I took him inside so he could get his exit exam, congratulated the couple who seemed very pleased, and went back out into the kennels. In a few minutes I was paged to come back inside, which something told me wasn’t good news - I had seen the Vet Tech speaking with the couple but didn’t know why - Rex’s ears are cropped, so they tend to get dirty easily/quickly so she told the couple to be aware of that and keep his ears clean because he would be prone to ear infections otherwise - let me back track - the couple told me they were adopting a dog to be a companion for their other dog who had recently been diagnosed with cancer. But suddenly they couldn’t adopt Rex, even though they said they wanted a companion for their other dog - because it was just going to be too much to clean his ears AND care for their other dog who is ill……huh? Which you know what? It’s better they didn’t adopt him - because if they’re going to balk at something as simple as remembering to clean his ears - because it’s too much work - guess where he would end up if he ever really did get sick? Probably back at the Shelter. Sorry for the long story - but this made me angry - I’m almost not surprised any more by what people do or are NOT willing to do when it comes to animals - but come on, this is ridiculous. Later in the afternoon when I walked by Rex’s kennel, he was lying at the kennel door, one paw crossed over the other, patiently waiting, quietly watching, a stoic look on his face - I really like him and was bummed that the adoption didn’t work out - but I also want him in a home where people care about him, want him around, aren’t going to leave him in the back yard, will include him in the family - you know - the way it’s SUPPOSE to be. Please take a moment to go and meet Rex - he really is a cool guy - at least I think so - adopt/rescue/foster
