Starsky and Hutch—our two rescued American Black Bears at Durhams Bear Canyon—live up to their species name, but bear in mind, these types of bears are horses of all different colors. American Black Bears—one of three bear species that inhabit North America—can be blue-gray, blue-black, brown, cinnamon or even pure white and, unlike most bears, don’t truly hibernate. If they live in places where food isn’t available year-round, they will undergo a winter dormant period and refrain from eating, drinking or relieving themselves. Don’t even think about bothering them, though. They’ll still wake up when disturbed. In addition, black bears are excellent climbers, great swimmers and can run up to 30 m.p.h. #bearaware #bearweek
