Start-up Business: When is the Best Time to Consult with a Lawyer? Start up businesses often follow a pattern, mine was no different. In the beginning, I concentrated only on getting clients and doing the right things for those clients. After the first 15 years with my nose to the grindstone, I had a business partner with a different business philosophy from my own, a 6,000 sq. ft. building with a leaking roof, 28 people on the payroll and hundreds of clients demanding attention every day. Reality didn’t hit me until a company picnic, watching the baseball game and little children running around. I didn’t have that business, it had me. They all depended on me. I panicked. Don’t wait for panic to snap you into reality; take control of your business from the beginning by treating it seriously. The cost I paid for always being behind the business power curve was serious burn-out. My health, my family and my self esteem all suffered because of it. By getting competent legal advice as soon as your business shows signs of surviving, you can avoid needless and costly mistakes. Competent legal counsel will be able to alert you to issues that are not apparent while your nose is pressed to that grindstone. It enables you to resolve management issues before they overtake you so you can be proactive rather than reactive, not constantly putting out fires. Approaching your business seriously means taking a long view, beyond getting clients and providing services, it means anticipating hidden legal issues. It means planning an exit strategy. The first 15 years will fly by before you know what happened and I can tell you from experience you don’t want to panic then.
