Started this vacation memory to Ohio about 3:00a so guess I need to continue my journey! We would leave our room at the Motor Court or Motor Inn somewhere in KY , while it was still dark. We would try to find a truck stop because it was the consensus of my parents, that they have the best food. One place, we used to stop at, had large plate glass windows, streaked by smoke from all the transfer trucks & a huge horseshoe shaped bar. At every booth, they had the little juke boxes where you could turn the directory, put in a dime & push buttons & magically had music ! As long as I had chocolate milk & a shirred egg for breakfast, I was happy. No body made eggs like my Mama & she even went into the kitchen of that Truck Stop & made one, after returning burnt eggs twice! ( I was not spoiled!) Because our one day trip had turned into two, we got to stop at little interesting places along the way. Somehow I always managed to get a new stuffed animal to add to the menagerie in the back seat; one time this was a yellow print Mama Giraffe with a baby in her pouch. Two places that I remember stopping were Levi Jackson State Park, in KY where we would have a picnic & I could swing & slide; it was such a beautiful place. We also stopped to see our friend, Harland Sanders in Corbin,KY ! Yes, I knew the owner of Kentucky Fried Chicken...he was worried about what that blasted Interstate would do to his business ! Guess that question has been answered... At Covington KY, we would cross the mighty Ohio River into Cincinnati, Ohio. I loved looking at the tug boats pulling the big barges, & the bridges above & below. ( If we did drive through, loved to see all the lights & tune into the Cincinnati radio stations on my little transistor radio which would only pick up at night.) I knew when we hit Cincinnati we were about 100 miles to Troy which is where my family lived. I was amazed at how huge Proctor & Gamble Company was... Because of the building of I-75, there were a lot of detours going through Cincinnati & sometimes we would stop in some pretty eclectic places which were very interesting. Because of the construction, we went about 100 miles in the wrong direction... I kept telling them but no one would listen. By the time we hit that Ohio state line, I thought we should be at Grandmas & Grandpas because they lived in Ohio. Patience would be running thin. I would start looking for signs for Dayton because I knew it wouldnt be long then & I read every mileage sign which unfortunately is still an endearing quality I continue to this day ! Everyone would be hungry, thirsty & need a potty break ( not necessarily in that order) but we would not stop until we reached Ks Hamburger Shop on Main St in Troy, Ohio ! To be continued ...
