Started to read Higgs Discovery by Lisa Randall today. This is my first book on English (all the previous were read on Russian). And even though the level of my English is too poor to grasp all the information in details I hope it is sufficient enough to catch the main idea. Since the very start of the book it becomes clear that the discovery was indeed very important. As Lisa writes, there was no physicist who was entirely sure that the Higgs Boson will be found at least with energy levels achieved by LHC - or even that it will be found ever. Some physicists (Stephen Hawking among them) even lost their bets when it was found :) And as Lisa describes her feelings after obtaining the information about discovery I was flabbergasted. So despite the fact that the whole Standard Model was based upon this Higgs mechanism nobody was entirely sure that this particle will ever be found. And even though Im now at my workplace and some work has to be done, Im already waiting the evening to continue with the book. Is everything ok with me? haha
