Starting Sunday week on SBS (and on catchup afterwards) -- The Great Australian Race Riot - 3 part series. And heres a potted history by Peter Fitzimons - with an interesting take on it: But here is the strange and wonderful thing. After each riot, there has been an extraordinarily uniform response. That is, the broad mass of people reel in horror, get their bearings, and then use the ugliness of the riot as a clear sign of the direction we should not be heading henceforth. On each occasion, decent Australia rises up, tells the rioters to pull their bloody heads in, and race relations actually improve afterwards. Race riots are one of the ways Australia reinvents itself. Hope so. Or is that the surface official line, while underneath it still festers?
