Starting a new thread based on this comment that Runaas Deheem had made in another thread. Sorry Runaas, this is not an attack but an attempt to use this to start a discussion: Not a single molvi has done anything significant for Pakistan from 1857 till now. Aik bhi nahi. I have made my journey from disliking molvis to appreciating them (in fact, appreciating all diversity that we have so long as it is kept within limits), and since someone had once made a case for me, I thought it might be useful to open this up. 1) What is a molvi-- I want to understand what people mean by this term. Molvi who preach in the mosque? (That would include Dr. Ghulam Murtaza Malik too), or ONLY in the mosque? Anyone who has a beard? Anyone who openly attributes all his successes to God or religion? Anyone who quotes from Islamic sources? A qualified religious scholar (e.g. Ghamidi)? Someone with a formal degree (e.g. Khalid Zaheer)? Leaders of militant organizations who claim to be servicing religion? Those who have written works on religion (e.g. Sir Syed)? etc. 2) What is anything significant -- that is how do we determine the scope. Does it include services of national importance, e.g. would we include judges of the Federal Shariat Court who qualify the molvi definition above? Does it include artists whose works were awarded and they were or turned molvi? What about those who have fought back terrorism via fatwas, condemnation and jihad by pen? What about those who played a role in preserving religion in Pakistan (assuming it was a non-militant and non-extremist version)? etc.
