Starting on Monday... Middle School Matters: Teaching Writing Across the Disciplines with a Focus on Unit Planning, for 5–8 grade teachers Monday, July 8, 2013 – Friday, July 12, 2013 (9:30 AM–2:30 PM); 2 full semester unit of credit. More than presenting a collection of powerful writing lessons, Kathleen Cohen and Suzanne Murphy will lead teachers in discussions and explorations to clarify what the standards mean. Following the lead of Pathways to the Common Core (Calkins, Ehrenworth and Lehman), morning sessions will center on the closer relationship between reading and writing, the composition of narrative, informational and persuasive writing, and writing across the curriculum. Kathleen and Suzanne look forward to working with teachers from every discipline, and time will be allotted to share, find and integrate primary sources in all curricular areas. Afternoon sessions will give participants opportunities to work independently and collaboratively to create writing units and experiment with a variety of writing forms that align with the Common Core standardswhile engaging students to write more and at greater depth.
