Starting to get tense here in Taipei. Reports of Taiwans notorious gangster Chung AnLi (The White Wolf), currently on bail for a myriad of crimes, is amassing some 2000 thugs to disperse the peaceful demonstrators. There have been some facebook reports of teargas being used, but as far as I can see on this live feed (appledaily.tw/LIVE/fastnew), the police are standing in formation in the middle of thousands of protesters. While it is a very complicated issue, some say there is no real harm in the 64 service area concessions the trade agreement opens up to Mainland interests and of those, they may not create new businesses nor monopolize existing ones, many, many Taiwanese people fear this agreement cedes too much economic power to their 6-decade old enemy. Barring an incident last week where the police attacked demonstrators in front of the Executive Yuan, this has been a largely peaceful movement. For the KMT to stand idly by while their gangster cronies level threats at organizers families is beyond the pale. One can onjly hope that the cooler of heads prevail and Taiwan can emerge from this with a stronger democracry and continue to be a shining example to the rest of the world for creating freedoms while being oppressed by a tyrannical superpower.
