Starting to see some media coverage regarding airline safety in lieu of recent events. I can hear the engine of the fear machine rumbling to life and as a pilot, albeit an amateur one, I feel compelled to push back against such bullshit. Air travel has in the past, and still does provide, one of the most statistically safe modes of transporting humans from one point to another in a mechanized vehicle. Two commercial jet airliners go missing and one is shot down in a known conflict zone over about a two month period and people are losing their minds. Do you realize how many automobile accidents have occurred in that same period, with an astronomically higher death toll. I get it. Flying can feel scary. Youre over a mile in the sky, moving faster than sound in a machine with millions of parts built by hundreds of different companies. Unlike GM though, none of them have had to recall thousands of their machines due to poor engineering. Fear is a natural human response to certain stimuli, but an intellectually honest person will temper that fear with reason.
