Startling evidence has emerged that a senior official of the Peoples Party (PP) was present when former Budget Director Paul Mphwiyo was shot at his home last year. This comes as hearing of cases involving some of the suspects in the Capital hill financial scandal is expected to start today in Lilongwe. According to the Daily Times, documents indicate that Mphwiyo was under immense pressure to make dubious payments to various companies. The former budget director has also claimed in the document that another PP official confided in him that some people had given him a 10 day life ultimatum to cooperate in making payments of sums of money amounting to billions of kwacha. Mphwiyo has further implicated one of the suspects arrested in connection with his shooting, as one of the people who threatened him to make payments. Over 20 billion kwacha of tax payer’s money has been lost in the financial scam.
