Starving dog that survived on nothing but sticks and stones nursed back to health Alex was found wandering the streets emaciated and extremely close to death A starving dog that miraculously survived on nothing but sticks and rocks is making a remarkable recovery. Heartbreaking pictures show malnourished Alex who was found wandering the streets with virtually all of his bone structure visible as his fur clung to his skeleton. But rescuers say that despite his hardship, the adorable pooch has never stopped being a kind, lovely animal. Deanna Theis, the assistant director of the Southern Animal Foundation, told Fox 8 that when Alex was found in New Orleans he was perilously close to death. She said: How he is still alive at this point is pretty much a miracle. He was extremely close to death. The Weimaraner was taken in by the the Southern Animal Foundation, a no-kill rescue organisation, after they saw pictures of him on a website for a local animal control centre. X-rays of the emaciated and neglected dog revealed there was nothing but rocks and twigs in his stomach, and as experts t the foundation battled to save Alex they believe they may have overfed him, causing his stomach to bloat. This meant he needed emergency sugary because his stomach had flipped inside his body. The happy dog now now weighs 43 pounds and is getting stronger with each day. Once he is back to full health, the Southern Animal Foundation hopes to be able to find him a permanent home.
