State Department of Education officials say their number one priority is ensuring students have access to education and faculty/staff can continue working no matter where the Puna lava flow heads. Despite stalling over the last few days, experts say as long as Kilauea keeps erupting -- it will continue downslope and makai, but until it starts moving again its unclear where or when. According to the DOE, an estimated 1,800 students and 300 employees will be impacted in one way or another when the flow crosses Highway 130. There are a lot of unknowns right now, so officials are reviewing various scenarios and creating contingency plans.
