State Journal had another ill-informed editorial attacking the Landmarks Commission today. Heres what Stan, one of the pseudonymous readers -- a big fan of mine, obviously -- wrote: The Landmarks Commission, rather than being an asset to our city, has the effect of an unelected, unaccountable posse of gladhanders and bootlickers for the preservation lobby. Its led - permanently, it seems - by Madisons own tinpot dictator, Stu Levitan. It should hardly suprise anyone that the Commission is now pushing a provision that would prohibit the Council from overriding the Commissions rulings if a hardship is deemed by the Commission to have arrived through neglect. A cornerstone of the democratic process is that final decision-making authority must always rest in the hands of individuals or bodies that are DIRECTLY accountable to the people. Given Chairman Stus unwillingness to tolerate criticism it is both sad yet unsusprising that the Commission would take further steps to disrespect democracy in favor of its own selfish, petty motives.
