State Title Recap... You could smell the food from afar and see the tailgates throughout the campus of Benedictine this afternoon! In was a beautiful day at Bobby Ross Stadium as the VISAA Division I State Championship kicked off at 1:00 between two great catholic schools as our Benedictine Cadets were set to do battle with the Bishop Ireton Cardinals. The first half showed both defenses coming up big as neither team was able to get on the board in the early going. However, the Cardinals struck first on a 6 yard pass and catch to take the early 7-0 lead with 8:19 left to go in the half. Four minutes later it was Senior Running Back Ramon Jones who broke a few tackles and rumbled in for the TD after a pass from Bracey to tie the score at 7-7 going into the locker room. The Cadets came out in the second half knowing that the defense has played lights out all season in the second half of ball games throughout the year and this title game would be no different. After a scoreless third quarter on both ends, Cameron Cougill broke the tie at the 5:20 mark with a 22 yard field goal that split the uprights. Benedictine took a 10-7 lead with 9:44 left to go in the game. Still anybodys game, on the ensuing drive, that is when the Cadets broke it open! It was David Pilot that read the quarterbacks pass beautifully and intercepted the ball for a 40 yard pick 6 that resulted in a touchdown that sent the alumni who were watching from the end zone in a frenzy. This put the Cadets up 16-7 with 8:56 left to go in the game. The next drive, the Cardinals fumbled and Graham Flinn picked it up and scampered from one side line to the other for the long 43 yard run and got stopped just short of the goal line. Bracey then ran it in from one yard out for another Benedictine Touchdown with 7:27 left to go. As the clock wined down, the defense was at their best once again as the Cardinals could not gain any momentum. As the clock struck 0:00 the Cadets crowd went wild as Greg Lilly and the Benedictine Cadets became the 2014 VISAA State Champions for the first time in 13 years! Final Score Benedictine 23 Bishop Ireton 7. After the game, Coach Lilly had this to say, Our players are unselfish and love their teammates. They are champions and they are Cadets. It was a total team effort from the hot days of workouts on the track and in the weight room in June until the last seconds ticked off the clock this afternoon.
