State opposes Pinetown truck drivers bail Published: Thursday, 2013/10/17 THE State is opposing bail in the case of truck driver Sanele May, the accused in the Pinetown accident. He hid his face with a blanket yesterday in the Pinetown Magistrates Court, which was packed. Investigating officer Sanjeev Singh said May should be denied bail because of the seriousness of the case. “I worry for his safety because people are outraged and they are still shocked by the incident. Besides he’s a flight risk because he had entered the country illegally,” said Singh. May’s attorney Louis Bernard said bail conditions could be set for him to report to the Nhlangano Police Station in Swaziland. Bernard said May’s uncle, known as Sibandze, is a Swazi policeman who promised to ensure that May won’t skip bail if it is granted. But Singh said he didn’t trust Sibandze because he was the one who allowed May to come to the country without proper documents. Bernard said the allegation wasn’t true, that May had asked Sibandze for permission to come and look for a job in SA and the uncle agreed. The court heard that May was an orphan who lived in Nhlangano with his uncle until April last year. Singh said the Department of Home Affairs issued May with a holiday visit permit on 24 October last year but didn’t allow him to work here.
