Statement as of 7:41 am CST on November 21, 2013 Special Statement ... Significantly colder temperatures with chances for wintry precipitation from tonight into early next week... After a period of mild weather... a strong cold front will plunge into the region this afternoon... bringing blustery north winds and sharply colder temperatures. Temperatures by Friday morning will drop into the upper teens across the southern Texas Panhandle to upper 20s and lower 30s across the rolling plains... with wind chills falling into the single digits and teens. Daytime temperatures on Friday will remain below freezing... with up to 36 hours of freezing temperatures possible before most areas warm to slightly above freezing on Saturday. In addition to the much colder temperatures... light freezing drizzle and sleet will develop Thursday night well behind the cold front. The wintry precipitation will begin across the southern Texas Panhandle Thursday night and then spread to the South Plains and rolling plains throughout the day on Friday. A thin glaze of ice will be possible by Friday morning which could create dangerous travel conditions... especially on bridges and overpasses. Precipitation chances should diminish by late in the day Friday... but could resume as early as Saturday as a potent storm system organizes in the Desert Southwest. As this storm enters the region Sunday and Monday... a potentially more significant bout of wintry weather is possible... with an increased chance of accumulating snow particularly near the New Mexico state line. Be sure to monitor the forecast over the next few days as details become clearer.
