Statement by Fred Wyngaard, provincial chairperson of COPE in the Northern Cape Cope has lodged a formal complaint with the IEC about illegal election posters of the SACP, the ANC and ICOSA. The three parties have put up election posters that do not comply with section 107 of the Electoral Act. It must therefore be removed. We have met with Mr Bonolo Modise and we have received the assurance that the matter will be addressed at the party liaison committee scheduled for tomorrow. Section 107(2) of the Electoral Act clearly states that, Any printed matter intending to affect the outcome of an election must state clearly the full name and address of the printer and the publisher. Furthermore, section 107(4) of the Electoral Act prohibits the distribution of election material that does not comply. The election material that does not comply with section 107(2) and which must therefore be removed is: - all reds placards with the SACP logo and the slogans Do it for Madiba or Do it for Chris Hani. - all red placards with the ICOSA logo and the slogan Dis nou ons beurt; - the black, yellow and green flags with the picture of Jacob Zuma. We are very serious about this matter. We have always been serious about acting in defence of the Constitution and the rule of law. All parties, whether the biggest in the country or the smallest in the province, must comply with the Electoral Act and its Regulations. It has not been a month since parties all signed the provincial Code of Conduct wherein parties pledge to create an environment for free, fair elections. We know that our posters comply with the necessary regulations. We invite anybody who feels that there is an irregularity with COPEs posters to raise the matter with the IEC. END
