Statement from CFMEU National Secretary Michael OConnor - White Ribbon Day Taking a stand against family violence The CFMEU understands that family and partner violence have a far reaching impact on women, children and the wider community and we are committed to showing leadership on this issue. As an organisation with a high percentage of male members we have a unique role to play in spreading the message of the importance of taking a stand against family violence. In 2013 the union launched an ongoing campaign aimed at curbing violence against women called Real Men Don’t Abuse Women. The campaign emphasises that violence against women is unacceptable and encourages men to speak out against it. The Union has been taking action in support of White Ribbon Day across the country. A number of our senior officials are White Ribbon Ambassadors and the campaign has received widespread support from our membership. Yesterday in Perth hundreds of construction workers took the White Ribbon oath swearing never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women. Victorian members have also shown strong support for the campaign with the White Ribbon flag on display on tower cranes on the city skyline. In Queensland over 200 construction workers at the Pacific Fair shopping centre job swore the White Ribbon oath this morning and over the coming days workers on sites across Queensland will take the oath and swear never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women. The CFMEU strongly supports the push to include Domestic Violence Leave in agreements and awards and we believe that businesses that have publicly supported White Ribbon can demonstrate their commitment by supporting the inclusion of these clauses in awards and agreements that cover their enterprises. The Union is proud to support the valuable work that White Ribbon does in the community.
