Statement from Chairman Herman Williams Sr. regarding Lorraine Loomis being elected chair of NWIFC: “We lift our hands in support of Lorraine Loomis as the newly elected chair of the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission. Her experience and commitment to protecting our interests as Treaty Tribes is well documented. The Tulalip Tribes have every confidence that she is the best person to continue the work of Billy Frank Jr., most notably, in advancing the collective argument that our Treaty Rights are at Risk and that it is the responsibility of our trustees to intervene in the destruction of the habitats that support our Salish Sea resources and cultures. The protection of our Treaty-reserved rights to fish, hunt and gather as our ancestors have done since time began is the single most important issue to the Tulalip Tribes. Lorraine will represent our interests with the strength of purpose our situation requires.” ---Chairman Herman Williams Sr. Lorraine Loomis, a Swinomish tribal member, has been elected chairwoman of the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission. Lorraine replaces the late Billy Frank Jr., who served as the commission’s chairman for more than 30 years. Shawn Yanity, Stillaguamish tribal chairman, was elected to replace Loomis as vice chairman. Ed Johnstone of the Quinault Indian Nation will continue as the commission’s treasurer.
