Statement from @NSPCA - regarding the animals and reptiles confiscated. Dear all our supporters, we have very sad news to report - unfortunately all the reptiles and ducks confiscated from the West Rand Pet & Bird farm were all sent over the rainbow bridge due to their poor health and condition. We know we will now be crucified for this by all the anti SPCA people. Please bear in mind that the animals were confiscated in the first place due to their poor health and condition. The SPCA did not make the decision to humanely euthanase these animals - the decision was made by an independent veterinarian that specialised in wild animals, including reptiles and exotic animals. We emphasise the fact that wild animals belong in the wild and not in captivity or as pets! Wild animals, especially reptiles require direct sunlight for their growth and health - one cannot fix bone degeneration and calcium deficiency over night, in some cases this cannot be fixed at all. The animals were suffering and the best for them were humane euthanasia. A lot of people asked us to rehome the animals or send them to a rehabilitation centre. We cannot rehome wild animals as this is against our policy and any person will agree on this principal as wild animals are wild and belong in the wild and not as pets or confined in captivity. These animals were all exotics and cannot be sent to a rehabilitation centre as rehabilitation centres only deal with indigenous wild animals with the aim of releasing them back into the wild. Exotic animals cannot be released back into the wild as they do not belong in South Africa. Our goal is to prevent cruelty and that is what we will continue to do. We do not like to euthanase animals and our staff, especially the Inspectors who removed these animals, are all very emotional – they rescued these animals at the end of the day. We will not leave this case and ensure that no animal suffers any longer at this pet shop – justice will be served for these animals! Thank you to all our supporters for supporting us and the work we do. Without YOU – we are nothing and cannot prevent animal cruelty.
